Date: Fri, 7 May 2004 06:49:11 EDT
From: cubadot@aol.com
Subject: Fwd: Blackburn and Darwen United Against racism

Dear Comrades

BADUAR is currently distributing copies of a special election edition of
Searchlight door to door. Already, approx. half of the Higher Croft
Ward has been done.

We have arranged further dates to carry on with the distribution, which
are as follows:

Monday 10th May
6-30pm
Aldi Car Park at Ewood

Saturday May 15th
11-00am - 1-00pm
Spiral Staircase
Blackburn Market

Monday 17th May
6-30pm
Aldi Car Park at Ewood.

Please make every effort to come out and help. If you can't come
yourself, can you please let other people know so that they can join in.

We don't want any fascist coucnillors on the Borough Council and as
importantly, we don't want the BNP sneaking in on a minority vote for the
European Parliament.

We understand that the ballot papers are due out on the 25th May, so we
do not have a long time to get the Searchlight material out to counter
the racist and fascist views of the BNP and their ilk.

Even, if you can only do a half an hour, every bit helps.

Cheers
George

IRSP Anti Racist meeting in Belfast last Tuesday
by Irp Monday, Feb 9 2004, 4:53am

IRSP Anti-Racism Meeting (and the elusive Davy Carlin)
The IRSP held a very successful meeting on racism in West Belfast last Tuesday where over 30 people heard a very interesting discussion on racism in Ireland. Unfortunately the invited speaker, Davy Carlin from the Anti Racist network cried off sick (we were delighted to see that Davy had recovered sufficiently to attend the ARN meeting on Wednesday).
In Davy¹s absence a member of the IRSP Ard-Comhairle led the discussion. He pointed out the links between sectarianism and racism and traced anti-Irish racism back to the 12th century. He drew out the racism behind the attitude of the British ruling class during the Great Famine and explained how one of the driving forces behind the Ulster Unionist case against Home rule was racism and how some unionists regarded the ³ Irish² as inferior beings to the white Anglo-Saxons.
The notion that republicans and nationalists could be smug about racist attacks in Loyalist areas was strongly knocked on the head. All of us could be liable to racist attitudes and republican socialists needed to start challenging sexism, anti-gay prejudice and racism in their daily lives. We had to live our personal lives by practising our beliefs and challenging prejudice wherever we find it. But we also needed to engage in mass political action against racism and so we should be standing shoulder to shoulder with all those under attack from the low life reactionary storm troopers

Anti-Racism Group Branching Out

By Joanne Lowry

THE Anti-Racism Network (ARN) is to set up four branches across Belfast as the fight to halt racist attacks in the city gains momentum.

ARN chairman David Carlin said members had agreed at their last meeting to establish branches in north, south, east and west Belfast.

"We felt there was a need to branch out because if there are racist attacks happening within communities, then they should be dealt with by that local community - by a neighbour, rather than an outsider coming in," said Mr Carlin.

Last night saw the setting up of the west Belfast group at Culturlann on the Falls Road.

The south Belfast branch will be launched on Friday night at Ballynafeigh Community Centre, with the north and east Belfast groups being established within the next week, said Mr Carlin.

"We are hoping to localise these groups even further, perhaps into areas, so that it will be easier to organise a robust approach to racism within communities," he said.

He said the ARN would also be establishing a branch within the Queen's University student movement.

Mr Carlin said that, due to pressure from antiracism organisations, and following the success of an anti-racism rally in Belfast, the British National Party had disbanded in Belfast.

IRAQI UNIONS NEED YOUR HELP - AGAIN
In early December, U.S. troops raided the headquarters of the
Iraqi Federation of Workers Trade Unions (IFTU). During the raid,
the troops sealed the building -- and today, more than 3 months
later, the building is still sealed. The emerging democratic,
independent trade union movement in Iraq is working without a
headquarters, without
office equipment, and without funds. Today, as in December,
they are appealing to us to help.
The IFTU has a website in English and Arabic and as of today, it
has a facility for you to make donations online, securely, using
your credit cards. You can see this by going to their site at
http://www.iraqitradeunions.org/ and clicking on "Make a
donation" in the upper right corner.
If every individual reading this message were to send just $10 or
£5 to the IFTU, the organization would be enormously
strengthened -- and it would be able to get on with the job of
building a free and independent trade union
movement in Iraq. Please give generously.  Thanks.

The Campaign Against Prison Slavery has declared Saturday the
24th of April 2004 a National Day Of Action.

We urge all class conscious individuals, and revolutionary
organisations to mobilise against the state and private capitalist
exploitation of incarcerated people.

Using people imprisoned by the state as slave labour for private
profiteers is the ultimate expression of the true nature of
capitalism- fascist and totalitarian. We have the opportunity in
Britain to smash this practice while it is relatively weak.

This scourge affects all of us. It acts as an incentive for the ruling
class to get more working class people into jail and promotes
the criminalisation of more and more aspects of our lives and
culture. It drives down wages on the outside and makes life on
the inside even more miserable as education and leisure
facilities are culled to make way for sweatshops.

The Campaign against Prison Slavery has for more than a year
targeted one of the biggest exploiters of prisoners in Britain;
Wilkinsons. While Tony `Whiplash' Wilkinson sits on a fortune of
more than £365 million prisoners are forced to package his
goods 30 hours a week for less than a fiver!

We encourage all revolutionaries, anti-fascists and working
class people to pressure Wilkinsons out of prisons by any
means at their disposal. A visible and effective act of defiance at
your local Wilkinsons store on Saturday the 24th of April will be a
good first step.

More information, leaflets, propaganda and other goodies are
available at www.againstprisonslavery.org  and
www.mydadsstripclub.com
There are established CAPS groups up and down the country;
they can all be contacted through the websites above.

Keep safe, stay free and have fun visiting the vengeance of the
oppressed upon the heads of Babylon.

Respect public meeting: George Galloway & Anas Altikriti,
Monday 26th April 7.30pm, Conference Auditorium, Leeds Uni!

Respect – the Unity Coalition has set an ambitious target of
raising half a million pounds and recruiting 10,000 members in just two and a
half months. Can we do it? It's up to you and all our supporters.

With the European and Greater London Assembly elections
taking place on 10 June we have very little time to raise the
money we need to carry out a huge election campaign. We need
to get a leaflet into every household in Britain. This itself is a
massive task, with up to 20 million leaflets being delivered by the
post office. In addition every region will need posters, stickers,
billboards, copies of the Respect Declaration, and general
campaigning election leaflets for use on the streets, at
workplaces and in the colleges.

In total this will cost each of the eight European constituencies
outside London around £50,000! The cost for London, with the
GLA elections as well, is twice that - £100,000!

Can we do it? Yes we can!

We have the most enthusiastic and determined supporters. We
know that there has to be an alternative to New Labour and the
other pro-war parties at these elections. We have marched many
times against the war on Iraq and the continued occupation;
against the attacks on civil liberties and the rise in racism fuelled
by the government's policies. We have rallied people against
privatisation, top-up fees and in defence of asylum seekers and
decent pensions.

Now we have to win the biggest vote possible for Respect as the
only serious alternative to the war-mongers and the privatisers.

We are, therefore, appealing to all our supporters to make the
biggest donation possible. Every single penny counts.

We know that many supporters are unwaged, low waged,
pensioners or students. But we are putting out an ambitious call,
confident that we can raise the cash we need.

We need 3,000 supporters to give at least £100. And we need
another 100 supporters to give £1,000. There may even be some who can
give more!

At the same time, we have launched a membership drive to
recruit 10,000 members by 10 June. That would raise a further
£100,000.

Can you give Respect £100? It's just £10 per week for the next
ten weeks. Can you give us more?
Whatever you can give; whether it's £5 or £500, every donation
will be a blow to Blair and New Labour who think they can take
their votes for granted.

30th March 2004

Dear brothers and sisters,

Please accept this letter as a request from Oxfordshire UNISON health
branch to support the launch of an Oxfordshire Unite Against Fascism
campaign group.  A copy of this letter is being sent to other Oxfordshire
trade union branches, community groups and political parties.

Unite Against Fascism is a new national campaign with the aim of
alerting British society to the rising threat of the extreme right gaining an
electoral foothold in this country, in particular the British National
Party (BNP).

We aim to unite the broadest possible spectrum of society to counter
this threat.

Until recently this country has not seen the kind of rise of the
extreme right that has blighted many countries elsewhere in Europe. However
in the recent local elections the BNP averaged 17 per cent in the wards
they contested, and averaged 20% in by-elections they have contested
since then.

On 10 June 2004 there will be European, local and London Mayor and
Assembly elections. Given the variety of electoral systems in place for
different elections, on its current levels of support there is a real
danger that the BNP could get a significant platform in elected
institutions.

The BNP can be defeated. The majority of people in this country abhor
the BNP. If every-one votes we can stop the BNP. Our campaign will urge
people to use their vote to stop the BNP

The Unite Against Fascism launch statement reads:

'For evil to triumph all that is necessary is that good people do nothing'

"We call, as a matter of the greatest urgency, for the broadest unity
against the alarming rise in racism and fascism in Britain today.

The Fascist British National Party averaged 17 per cent of the vote in
the seats they contested in the last local government elections and now
has a record 17 councillors across Britain. They are poised to field
candidates in the 2004 European Parliament, local government elections
and the next general election, in what they hope will be the biggest
electoral assault ever mounted by the far right in this country.

The BNP is now trying to present itself as a 'respectable' political
party. In fact they are a fascist party. Currently they seek to attract
votes on the basis of racism, Islamophobia, anti-semitism, homophobia
and the vilification of refugees and asylum seekers. But fascists also
stand for the expulsion of Black and Asian people from this country, the
destruction of the trade unions and the elimination of basic democratic
rights.

We believe that this dangerous situation requires a new and united
response from all those dedicated to freedom and democracy. Now is the time
for all of us to combine our forces and unite in a broad and common
front against this common threat."

In addition there is the local problem of the National Front standing
candidates in the local elections in Bicester.  Last year their vote was
held down by trade unionists and anti-racist campaigners urging people
to not vote for a nazi organisation in the ward they stood.  The NF has
since said it plans to contest more seats this year.

We would be grateful if you would support this initiative by sending at
least one delegate from your organisation to the organising meeting
below.  The proposed purpose of the meeting is to build a public meeting
for a public launch of Unite Against Fascism, and to organise
fundraising and further campaigning activities.

Subject: Wantage Hospital leafletting Saturday 2pm

Dear all,

Wantage Hospital stewards and members are going to do a leafletting
outside WH Smiths (in Wantage) from 2 pm on Saturday.
The main purpose of the action is to generate publicity for the May 3rd
Demo in defence of public services - therefore press and media have
been
invited.

The line of the protest is to be positive - pointing out the value of
ALL Community Hospitals (stewards are worried that if we say the
hospital is under the threat of closure staff may start looking for
other work and leaving - which will guarentee this happens).

At a meeting today stewards made an appeal for other unions and
community activists and workers in other community hospitals to join
them at the event which should be short and to the point.

Please bring union banners.

Regards, Mark Ladbrooke
Chair UNISON Oxfordshire Health.

Street star julie gets threatened by racists

Sunday Sun, Mar 7 2004

Coronation street star Julie Hesmondhalgh has received threatening letters from far-right thugs after taking a public stand against fascism, it emerged yesterday.

Julie, who plays transsexual Hayley Cropper in the ITV soap, is a long-term supporter of the Unite Against Fascism group and regularly speaks at its rallies.

Speaking at a UAF rally in Manchester yesterday, the 34-year-old said she had received threatening letters and had her personal details posted on far-right websites.

She said: "It's a bit of intimidation. I've been getting offensive stuff and letters. The worst things are always anonymous. They have been posting things on websites. It's just a horrible, horrible thing."

The personal details of Coronation Street co-star and fellow anti-racist campaigner Shobna Gulati, who plays shop assistant Sunita, are also on the site.

Julie said: "I'd rather stay at home but I feel I have a responsibility. I have just got to carry on. Shobna feels the same."

Sabby Dhalu, joint secretary of Unite Against Fascism, said the letters proved the racists were "rattled" by her support.

She said: "Having the support of a celebrity, especially from such a popular soap as Coronation Street, makes people sit up and take note. Racist individuals know this and don't like it."

Hesmondhalgh grew up in Accrington, Lancashire, and was dismayed at the electoral success of the BNP following racial disturbances in nearby Burnley and Oldham.

There is no suggestion the threats were linked to the BNP.

Police eject UAF thugs from meeting venue.

The thugs of the ANL are now trading as UAF to stifle democracy and free speech by any means necessary.

HOTEL PULLS PLUG ON TALKS

BY PAUL JAMES

11:00 - 31 March 2004
Police were called to a top Torquay hotel to help escort teachers and anti-Fascists from the premises.

Officers supervised the orderly removal of more than 20 trade unionists from the Livermead House Hotel after being alerted by anxious staff. The group, who left without fuss, then went to the Snooty Fox pub in St Marychurch where they completed their business.

Marching orders were given to members of the National Union of Teachers who did not notify the hotel about a Unite Against Facism discussion at the same venue.

But NUT spokesman Barrie Frost insisted: "This was a cock-up - not a conspiracy."

He was disappointed the hotel felt it necessary to bring in police to oversee the break-up of the meeting.

"It was not a case of us organising a gathering surreptitiously. I think the hotel just got a bit worried, so we called it off and went elsewhere. Everything was perfectly orderly and some good ideas came out of the meeting."

He accepted that wires may have been crossed in not telling the hotel that the TUC-backed Unite Against Facism would feature as part of the meeting.

He said the campaign was "not a weirdo thing" but a means of combating "the threat of the far right gaining an electoral foothold in Britain".

A fly poster advertising the Unite Against Facism discussion at the Livermead said: "This meeting has been organised as a first step towards bringing together all those who oppose the British National Party (BNP) in Torbay."

Mr Frost, who teaches at Dawlish Community College, said the teachers' union was concerned about the BNP becoming active in Torbay.

The Livermead House Hotel's general manager Tim Rew said he was running a respectable establishment which did not accommodate "fringe politics".

"By all means we would have had an NUT meeting here, but anything else other than that would not be appropriate," he said.

He praised police for the "diplomatic" way they had handled last Monday night's incident.

There will be a red protest in Leeds on Saturday 3rd April 2004. The protest is on behalf of Unison and they are handing out flyers telling people not to vote for the BNP in the elections on the 10th May. Protest organisor is John McDermott 07985 613 878. Rest assured that the Leeds Coalition against the war and the SWP will be strongly represented as well as the Kurdistan National Congress.

The SW Convention of RESPECT, the Unity Coalition was held on Sunday in Bristol. Representatives from Cornwall, Plymouth, Dorset, Gloucester, Exeter and Somerset joined those in Bristol to elect candidates for the South West Region in the June 10th Euro Elections. The PR system of voting means that seven candidates will stand in the election for the region.
Proportionate votes will be allocated to parties according to the total votes in the region, and those candidates topping the list will  be elected as MEPs.
In the Convention, attended by 150 people, many ex Labour voters and members declared their support for RESPECT as an alternative to the betrayals and war-mongering of New Labour. The Convention was introduced by a representative of the Fire Brigades Union (who are due to debate
dis-affiliation from Labour at their National Conference in May), Majid Kahn (West Midlands RESPECT Candidate), and George Galloway. A Campaign plan was also agreed and a SW Region Steering Committee established. The 7 candidates chosen each presented themselves for election with the following profiles:

JOHN BAMPFYLDE
Active over many years in trade unions in Bath. I was chair of Bath Trades Council and Union convenor in a print factory. I am currently a member of UNISON. I have worked as a legal advocate, firstly with street homeless people and now benefit claimants. I have been active in many campaigns
in Bath in the last 30 years. I am a member of Bath Stop the War Coalition. I am a member of Globalise Resistance and attended the European Social Forum in Florence (2002) and the Anti-Capitalism demonstrations in Prague, Genoa and Brussels. I have a partial disability and have practical experience of the problems facing people with disabilities.

PAULETTE NORTH
Daughter of a Vietnamese father and a Jamaican mother. Teaching in inner city schools since 1977. Prominent member of Bristol Defend Asylum Seekers Campaign who has led three successful high profile campaigns against family"deportations. Assistant Secretary of Bristol NUT. Parent governor at Portway School. Member of the Socialist Workers Party.

HANNAH PACKHAM
I am a 23 year old student at the University of the West of England in Bristol. I was a member of the Labour Party until recently, and was a local Labour Party youth officer and parish councillor in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire.1 am president of my university's STW group and have been
active in the anti-tuition fees campaign.

BERNY PARKES
I'm currently involved in Weymouth STWC & RESPECT and active within UNISON.
My politics & activism are rooted in my green-socialist perspective, and previously underpinned through Labour Party membership (1987-2002). I was an elected councillor on Merseyside. Labour has betrayed us & I see RESPECT as the broad radical ,alternative.

TONY STAUNTON
Arrested and tried for leading "Illegal" march against the War last year. Founder member of Nuclear Free Coalition against Trident in Plymouth. Led local strikes against privatisation and Council cuts. Led delegations to Nice and Genoa anti-Capitalist protests, European Social Forums in Florence
and Paris, and the World Social Forum in India. Secretary of the Council UNISON Branch, Secretary of Plymouth TUC and elected memberof the TUC South West Regional Council and Executive Committee. Works in a Social Services Family Centre with a 30 year background in Children's rights.
Parliamentary Candidate for Socialist Alliance in Plymouth 2001 and long standing member
of the Socialist Workers Party.

FANNE THOMAS
1979-90 Labour Party member and Bristol City Councillor for 3 years. Chair of the Women's Committee. I was one of the councillors who fought the campaign to refuse to pay poll tax and resisted the attempts to privatise the docks.1990 I was disciplined for speaking out against the right
wing drift of the Labour Party, and finally quit. I have actively supported the firefighters, opposed student fees and campaigned against the war in Iraq. I have been a teacher for the last 30+ years in Bristol and currently teach at the City of Bristol College. I am a member of the SWP

SAMI VELIOGLU
Born in Iraq in 1965, and now living in Bristol. In 1986 I graduated from Mosul University where I obtained a BA in Economics. Prior to my studies I was training in the Iraqi special back up forces army, part time over a period of 3 years. At the end of 1986 I was instructed to join the army to
fight in the war against Iran, a war I did not believe in. So I fled from Iraq. After that I lived and studied in a few count, ies. I became a British Citizen in 1999. I am now working on a project for conflict resolution, transforming and peace building. My goals and ambitions are saving lives, helping people and delivering peace to our troubled world.

Any support for RESPECT is welcome. Please contact bristolunity@hotmail.com, qww.respectcoalition.com or ring 0779 092 9708.

Subject: Re: Re: Fw: Insulting crap

There was a straightforward SWP motion calling for support for UNITE, but rather shrewdly, linking it to campaigns against state attacks on Asylum seekers and the Dungal detention centre and the promotion of a SSP Black members Network.  There was an amendment i, which correctly pointed up the role of the BNP under capitalism and its failure to make an impact in Scotland but failed to propose any real alternative except to call for more information on UNITE and called on the Exec to liase with UNITE on what role the SSP could play in it.  The SWP resorted to downright lies about the
percieved "nazi" threat in Pollockshields, Glasgow (where as most will know a white teenager was recently murdered in circumstances which initially indicated a possible racial motive, but now appears  to have been part of the usual gang strugles within the city) alleging that although the BNP
was a miniscule threat in the area, as indicated by Griffin being welcomed with less then open arms when he came up last week, The NF, which probably has less than 10 members in the whole of Scotland was active on the local estates and that racial tensions were at breaking point. From memory, no one opposed the substansive motion but there was some support for the amendment
despite debate being very limited by time factors, The Motion was carried, but not by a big margin as far as I could see. There was another motion up this afternoon linking  UNITE to support for RESPECT but I dont know whats happened with this as I was only able to attend yesterdays sessions, hopefully Sandy McBurney, or one of the other SSP comrades will be able to post a fuller report later.

This guy writes a hell of a lot of left propaganda responsible for reporting on SA demonstrations and meetings. He's also responsible for the Unity leaflets that are being distributed down south. He's also a key figure within the ANL along with Wyman Bennett.

Steve Godward, a firefighter of 24 years and an FBU divisional representative, was wooed by and stood for the Socialist Alliance as their candidate in Birmingham Erdington during the 2001 general election. Well-known in the area as an anti-racist, he is regularly harassed by the local far-right. He has consistently built good relations with local secular Muslims whom he was gradually winning over to the socialist politics of the SA.

And another thought- the ANL MK1 didnt defeat the NF overnight - from their electoral highpoints in the May 1976 and 1977, it took a long time for it to drop to the level it did in June 1979 General
Election - by relevant tactics for the day, propoganda, RAR and a commitment to physical force anti fascism through the Squads- on a scale which dwarfs anything being done now

We now have under 10 weeks to stop the BNP- and without being defeatist, we cant with th tactics propsed by UAF. The best people can do is to campaign for progressive forces in the Elections such
as the IWCA in London and the SSP Euro election campaign in Scotland

Next Thursday there is a by election for Cheshire County Council in Crewe- virgin territory for the BNP- and if they poll anything over 10% there- I think we had better start planning now on how to react with Griffin being an MEP as a fact to be faced - together with a possible MEP in Yorkshire

Dear Redwatch,

Some scabby Lib Dem councillor has taken it upon his shoulders to start an "Anti-Nazi" League branch up in Barnsley.
My family has been in this country for generations and I dislike being told by a closet communist that it's not possible to debate the issue of immigration. All this scumbag wants to do is harass and intimidate nationalists. Maybe if he knows people are also watching him, he might be a little bit more respectful of our traditions of free speech and cease his plans of violence against patriotic candidates!

About time these scumbags were challenged.  Unfortunately it is a bit like a mythological creature, you can chop it's head off but another one will appear in it's place.  Hopefully they will actually charge those responsible rather than just shut down the sites.
