Derby
Campaign Against Racism and Fascism (DCARF). Conference Notice
Dear Pamela Thompson,
The campaign was launched in
August, following the contribution of our individual members to the
sizable protests at the BNP’s Festival of Hate. Derby Telegraph’s
estimate (on 1st December) of the staggering cost of protecting this
event was £250,000. We can’t accept the cost of opposing this
racist/ fascist organisation should be paid by a community that didn’t
want them in the first place.
Following this we’ve campaigned
on a wider basis against racism and fascism in the Derby area:
• against Nick Griffin’s
meeting at the Roundhouse, London Rd on Wednesday 24th September
• leafletting faith communities;
campaigning/ working peoples’ organisations to build links across Derby
As you will be aware the BNP is
a fascist party, whatever its claims to the contrary. It presence
incites racism and violence follows swiftly afterwards.
We understand that Alan Warner,
the landowner for the ‘festival’ intends to apply for the BNP’s licence
again next year. We hope with your support to stop this in council
committee, by public campaigning and if necessary renewed demonstration.
We still need to campaign even
should the ‘festival of hate’ not return. BNP stalls have resumed in
Ripley market and the Amber Valley Group is monitoring these, it may
call for assistance to counter the trouble this represents for the
Labour movement.
The BNP has already begun it’s
canvassing for next year’s Euro elections. Racist attacks, including
the stabbing in Ilkeston of a young Polish worker (on his way to a
shift) have risen.
We invite all members to attend our
meetings St James Centre, Malcolm St (off Douglas St, Dairy House Rd)
7pm first Monday of the month [though next is 12th January]
We ask if you:
1. would agree to take leaflets
2. be prepared to invite a speaker
from DCARF to a meeting
3. wish to send a speaker
4. wish to discuss joint campaigns in
the future on the issues of racism and opposition to the BNP
5. wish to be notified of future DCARF
meetings.
6. attend/ be delegated to our
conference on Saturday 21st February 10:30 – 3:30 also at the St James
Centre. The conference is free and food laid on. Donations towards the
cost are welcome and should be made out, as for future affiliation, to
“Derby Campaign Against Racism and Fascism”.
Yours fraternally,
Graham Lewis
(Secretary; Derby Campaign
Against Racism and Fascism)
